Last Day In May

OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE…BOLD!

After a season of well worn grey, beige, and black, I’m sure I’m not the only one thrilled to see a little color sauntering down those runways.

A flash of hot pink, a blaze of yellow - these colors are sure to pop against the dreary backdrop of the Pacific Northwest.

All can be yours, just follow the link

Fast Company and Alissa Walker just named my book one of the 13 best design books of 2010. Hot Damn! I am in amazing company (mega humbled). You should really head over to the Fast Company post and check out the other 12. Totally. Flattered.

‘TWAS THE DAY AFTER CHRSITMAS

Another Christmas holiday come and gone, but it seems winter is just beginning.  With the months ahead of snowy cold winter evenings, what better excuse than to curl up with a hot cup o cocoa and a warm faux fur blanket by the fire.

Here’s to a warm, snuggly winter!

OVER THE RIVER AND THROUGH THE WOODS

My Thanksgiving traditions have evolved over the years, and this season is no exception.  Rather than do battle with the TSA agents at the airport, Mike and I have decided to load up the car and make a road trip out of it.

Before we stuff ourselves on turkey, wine, cranberries and the tense though no less exciting conversations with family, we’re making a stop in the fabulous coastal town of Mendocino.

Since the weather is a bit touch and go on the coast, I want to make sure I bring along some essentials.  A warm scarf to keep me snuggly, a great book to read by the roaring fire and of course some wine to toast me up inside and out.

From left to right: Heather Grey snood, Polaroid camera, A new book on Cleopatra, must have beauty kit as illustrated by Clare Owen, and a statement bottle of wine.

BETTER LATE THAN NEVER
These wallpaper calendars are such a surefire way to liven up your desktop, I only wish I had discovered them sooner.  Designed in collaboration with several friends, Shanna Murray presents an everyday necessity that is both elegant and practical.
The combination of inviting imagery, whimsical typeface and a quote to inspire is a completely fabulous way to begin and end the day.  I’m counting down these days for her December wallpaper. To learn more about Shanna as well as download your own, click here.

Italy’s must have accessory
While sipping tea (ok, wine) in Rome, I was lucky enough to capture this shot of a busy Roman. She was walking fast, presumably to or from the office, satchel in hand stuffed with papers…and carrying flowers.
Maybe she got them as recognition for a ‘job well done’.  Maybe they were a token of affection from a secret admirer.  Or maybe she just realized that one must have a lovely bouquet in hand, the better to add a little brightness to the day.

YOR VEGGIES ARE FLIRTING WITH YOU

As reports of below freezing temperatures continue to fill my inbox (yes, I subscribe to receive weather reports - gotta have something to talk about with strangers at the coffee shop), I have found myself staring at these beautiful shots of produce from Siena, Italy.

Ah, such bold playful colors, just the very sight of them can brighten my day.  While I long for the more savory winter veggies like squash, parsnips and the forbidden potato all year, they just don’t flirt with me in the same way as these vibrant specimens.

Something about the endive, the eggplant, even the persimmon (which I have never tried, btw) says “I’m not only gorgeous, but you’ll want to bring me home to mama”.  Which is a good thing, because isn’t she the one always telling you to eat your veggies?

Christmas Came Early!
For me a trip to the mailbox is often a forgettable, mundane experience.  Most correspondence consists of bills (never any fun) unwanted coupon flyers, and a constant stream of catalogs which clearly proves  I’m on the wrong mailing list (uh..RAM Electronics anyone?)
Today was different.  I finally received the debut issue of the new, the fabulous, the much anticipated shelter magazine, Anthology!Created by Meg Mateo Ilasco and Anh-Minh Le, Anthology is a smart and elegant showcase of talented artisans, unique locales, and enough user friendly tips on food, style and life that it’s easy to see how the mag lives up to their tag line, “living with substance and style”.  While currently a quarterly publication, you can visit their site to get that daily Anthology fix.  Enjoy!(photo courtesy of Smilebooth)
